Die Karte PCI-6503 nutzt eine programmierbare periphere 24-bit-Schnittstelle (Programmable Peripheral Interface, PPI). Jede Schnittstelle ist Plug-and-play-fähig und erfordert keinen separaten Card Manager für die Konfiguration. Das Modul PXI-6503 kann an Peripheriegeräte und andere Computer angebunden werden. Des Weiteren arbeitet die Karte entweder im uni- oder bidirektionalen Modus und unterstützt bei der Kommunikation mit Peripheriegeräten Handshake-Protokolle.
